FAQ About Makeup Makeovers...

1. What is a "Makeup Makeover"?

"Makeup Makeover" is an umbrella term I use to describe various personal services I offer. A Makeup Makeover is private and personalized makeup instruction based on each individual client and their specific needs. In the Services section of this site, I describe a few different types of services (makeup lessons, airbrush tanning, personal shopping, etc.)

top

2. Where are you located? How much does additional travel cost? Can I come to you for a lesson?

I am located in San Francisco, California and Sun Valley, Idaho. Any travel outside San Francisco in Northern California (Marin, East Bay, Peninsula) is a low additional fee. Also, depending on the service and type of booking, I may waive this travel fee. Travel outside of Northern California (Los Angeles, national, or international) is based on travel expenses and travel time. Because I work as an independent makeup and hair artist, I don't have my own studio where I can host lessons. If you prefer to have the lesson in San Francisco, one option is to find a friend in San Francisco that doesn't mind "lending" their home.

For more information on travel rates, or for a referral for an artist in your area, please contact me for a quote.

3. Can you show me how to do smoky eyes?

Yes!! That is the great thing about a Makeup Makeover... We can cover anything and everything you want to! Some clients want to learn a new "every day" look... Others want to learn how to copy their favorite celebrity beauty look. Just let me know what you want to learn and practice, and I will create a customized curriculum just for you.

4. How much does a Makeup Makeover cost?

For the most part, I charge by the hour, with a two-hour minimum. However, it varies from service to service. Regular makeup lessons are $200 for the first two hours, and $75 for each additional hour. Travel outside of San Francisco is additional. Please see the Services section of my web site for specifics. If you are interested in getting a specific quote, please contact me with the details.

5. How much does a makeup lesson cost?

Makeup lessons are $200 for the first two hours, and $75 for each additional hour. Makeup lessons for aspiring makeup artists are $240 for the first two hours, and $90 for each additional hour. Travel outside of San Francisco is additional.

top

6. Why do you have a two-hour minimum for some services?

From experience I have found that two hours is the minimum amount of time to cover a really basic makeup lesson. Minimums vary with each service, and some services have no minimum.

7. Do you do makeup and hair for weddings?

8. Why don't you always recommend a consultation before my wedding?

Many makeup artists begin their career doing weddings and special events. Because they are still gaining experience, I think a trial run is suggested to work out the hair and makeup style in advance. I have a lot of experience as a makeup and hair artist --from hundreds of weddings, to magazine covers, to national commercials, and top music videos. I am used to all types of clients, all types of requests, and all degrees of pressure!

In my industry, a portfolio and resume are the elements that "make or break" a makeup and hair artist. Please look over my portfolio here on this site and on my professional site. I can also provide references.

At the time of booking and prior to your wedding I will discuss with you the look you want to achieve. On your wedding day, I am there to pamper and make you beautiful -- trust me!

9. What sort of experience do you have as a makeup artist?

10. I am not in Northern California, but I would like to find someone who offers similar services... Can you help me find someone?

Yes! Contact me with all your details, and I will do my best to help find someone.

I also work with my clients over the phone and email.

11. What happens at a Makeup Makeover party? How much does it cost?

Just like an individual Makeup Makeover, a Makeup Makeover party is customized! For example, I have done group lessons for Bridal Showers, Bachelorette parties, Sweet Sixteen parties, pre-Prom, etc. I charge hourly for the parties and group events. Contact me and we can create the perfect party!

top

12. Do you offer phone or email support only for clients outside of Northern California?

Absolutely! I offer my non-local clients tips, techniques, and instructions over email or the phone. This service is included at no extra charge for local clients who have booked a Makeup Makeover.

13. What are your favorite cosmetic products?

I offer a current and comprehensive list of my favorite cosmetics and brushes, broken down by category, for $25. Please contact me for details. This list is included at no extra charge for clients who have booked a Makeup Makeover.

14. If I want to become a makeup artist, wouldn't it be better for me to go to a "real" makeup school that offers a certificate?

Unless you are going into Film/TV, or will be working in a spa/salon where a license is required I do not recommend makeup school.

Makeup schools are businesses, which is a bit different than a college or university. I have found that they often grossly misrepresent the industry, giving false hope to students. Most graduates of makeup schools are not working makeup artists.

Many people have contacted me to ask about makeup schools, and I always give the same answer -- don't go!

Now you are probably asking, did I go to school? I did. Only because I didn't know a single thing about this industry, and did not know anyone I could ask. If I were to go back in time, I would not go. I wish someone had told me the truth. I don't even tell clients that I went, and it is not on my resume.

Are you saying to yourself "Well, I have the extra money, so it can't hurt me, right?". Yes it can.

That time you spend in school is time you are not working on your portfolio, or drumming up business. Plus, in larger markets school is looked at negatively! People who will be hiring you either have not heard of the school, or have only heard negative feedback.

Now maybe you are saying "Well, I need to learn about how makeup photographs, and all the inside tricks!". That is why I wanted to go to school! But school didn't teach me these techniques. The teachers at makeup schools are typically not active in the industry! Look at who is teaching at the school... If they are a full-time teacher, then they are not working full-time as a makeup artist.

The school I went to has 2-3 classes per month of 20 students. Since I graduated, they have pumped out 3000+ "makeup artists." Out of my class specifically, I am the only one working in this field and supporting myself by makeup only. This is just one school! There are tons of other schools graduating students in even greater numbers.

The schools offer "certificates"--but a certificate has no legal meaning like a license. There is no such thing as a certified makeup artist, for example. It is just a piece of meaningless paper the schools give to you that show you attended their school.

I offer specific makeup instruction to makeup artists as an alternative to school. We will cover exactly what you need to learn--including the business side of makeup artistry. I work as a makeup artist, I know what it takes to be successful in this business.

15. How do I become a makeup artist? What is it like working as a makeup artist?

If you would like to read a FAQ document about the profession that includes how to get started, the different fields of makeup artistry, etc, please contact me. I charge $25 for this document, and accept checks, non-credit card PayPal, Money Orders, and Cashier's Checks.

FAQ About Airbrush Tanning...

1. How do sunless tanners work? What are the advantages?

All sunless tanners contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin. DHA combines with the amino acids to form a brown-color—the “sunless” tan. The “tan” starts to show up around 4 hours after application, and can continue to develop for up to 12 hours. In the 1970s the Food and Drug Administration added DHA to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients. In the 1980s, the cosmetic companies found a way to produce better results with DHA (browner, less orange).

Erythrulose is a similar ingredient that is sometimes added to sunless tanners. On its own, it develops much more slowly, reaching its full color over 2 days. When combined with DHA, it produces a deep dark tan that often lasts several days longer than a DHA-only tan.

Tanning via the sun or tanning beds (even the so called safe “UVA-only” beds) causes damage to the skin, leading to premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, and potentially skin cancer. You have made the safe choice by deciding to sunless tan—you can have a beautiful bronze glow and take care of your skin! For more information on skin cancer, please go to http://www.skincancer.org/.

Sunless tans do not provide any protection from the sun and UV rays. Please wear a broad spectrum sunscreen (protects against UVA and UVB) every day.

2. What are the differences between sunless tanners applied by hand, spray booths, and airbrush?

There are many sunless tanners available from drugstores and department stores, but they all contain the same active ingredient, DHA. They differ in formulation (mousse/cream/gel), scents, color (tinted/untinted), etc.

In recent years there have been a few new advances in sunless tanning. The first was the sunless tanning “spray booth.” Again DHA is the active ingredient, but the application is much different. You enter a stand up booth located at a salon, and are “misted” with a bronze-colored solution containing DHA. The spray booths evenly coat your entire body, which is an advantage. However, sometimes the sunless tan can be too dark on areas such as hands and feet, and there is only a “one-size-fits-all” tan delivered.

For those who prefer privacy, would like just a light glow, or only part of their body bronzed, the “spray booth” may not be a good option. Airbrush sunless tanning is the newest in sunless tanning application, and is a personal, customized service.

3. What exactly is airbrush tanning?

Airbrush sunless tanning is the application of a sunless tanning solution (containing DHA) using an airbrush. The airbrush applies a soft mist via compressed air. The huge benefits of airbrush tanning are in the personalized application. Special care is taken around hands, feet, elbows, and knees to make sure they are not too dark. Since people have slightly difficult results with sunless tanners, the application can be custom tailored to a client’s specific needs (a darker application for a more tropical glow, tanning of legs only, solution with or without bronzer, a very light application during the winter, etc). Rarely someone may be allergic to DHA (like with any cosmetic ingredient), and an erythrulose-only solution can be applied.

Please contact me for different airbrush tanning options available.

4. How do I prepare for my airbrush tan?

Exfoliate: Because the tanning solution reacts with the top layers of the skin, the tan fades as the skin exfoliates. Getting rid of dead skin before tanning will extend the life of the tan. If you don't exfoliate properly, the tan will start to flake off as quickly as 24 hours.

Salt and sugar scrubs can be an excellent choice, but make sure to thoroughly wash off all remaining oils, as this can interfere with your airbrush tan. One of the most effective ways to exfoliate is to use soft cotton washcloth, and a small amount of baking soda. Not the most glamorous, but in my experience the most effective! Concentrate on elbows, knees, feet, and dry areas of your body. Since we wash our faces so often, usually they are already exfoliated, but if you would like you can use a very gentle scrub, or plain cotton washcloth (no baking soda).

I recommend exfoliating thoroughly before your first airbrush tan, then gently exfoliate before maintenance sessions (feet, elbows, knees, and the rest of your body)—you do not need to completely remove your sunless tan! No harsh scrubbing or exfoliation is necessary. If there is any unevenness, do not worry—I can even out your tan easily.

Moisturize: Another key component to a great airbrush tan is moisturizing. The night before, make sure to moisturize. Pay special attention to your legs, knees, ankles, feet, elbows and knuckles.

Shave: Some clients like to shave the night before an airbrush tan, and some prefer to shave afterwards. In my experience, shaving after your airbrush tan is better.

The morning of your airbrush tan: I recommend showering the morning of your airbrush tanning session. Since it takes several hours for the tan to develop, you will not be able to shower (or swim) for several hours after the session. Do not reapply moisturizer after your shower, as this may interfere with your airbrush tan.

Wear loose clothing to your airbrush tanning session, cotton if you can. Cotton is not stained by the airbrush tanning solution, and you will develop evenly if you do not have on binding garments. When I spray you, I recommend wearing an old dark swimsuit bottom.

5. How do I take care of my airbrush tan?

Wait a minimum of 5 hours before you shower—waiting 12 is better. This will allow the solution ample time to react with the amino acids in the skin. Depending on how dark you want your sunless tan to be, and your skins natural rate of exfoliation, you will need a maintenance airbrush tanning application once every four to ten days to maintain your color.

I strongly recommend that my clients moisturize each day (or evening). Keeping your skin in great condition also helps makes your airbrush tan last as long as possible. Be gentle with your skin! For example, when drying off after a shower—pat, don’t rub. After airbrush tanning, clients have very soft skin with all the pampering done!

Another way to prolong the time your airbrush tan lasts is to apply a very light sunless tanner between sessions. You can make your own light sunless tanner by mixing a regular sunless tanning lotion with regular moisturizer (50/50). Please let me know if you need product recommendations. I also sell my Airbrush Bronze Tan Revitalizer—let me know if you are interested.

There are several things that may affect how long your airbrush tan lasts...

• AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), and Retin-A type products
• Bar soaps, especially deodorant varieties
• Band-aids or adhesive tape applied to skin will remove the airbrush tan
• Wax hair removal, depilatory hair removal products (eg. Nair), and hair bleach
• Submersion in hot tub or swimming pool with chlorine, salt water, or even a hot bath for an extended period of time. An application of a thick waterproof lotion sun block often helps.

6 . Where are you located? Do I come to you? Or will you come to my house to airbrush me?

I am located in San Francisco. I know privacy and convenience is very important to my clients, so I travel to you. Travel outside of San Francisco is additional -- please contact me for details.

7. Why should I get an airbrush tan from you instead of from a salon?

I currently work as a makeup and hair artist in San Francisco (www.nkmakeup.com) and first became familiar with airbrushing as a tool for applying body makeup. Over the past 3 years, I have branched out into airbrush sunless tanning and other personal services. With my experience as a makeup artist, I not only feel very comfortable with the airbrush equipment, but also can apply a custom-tailored airbrush tan that is individual to each client.

8. How do I make an appointment for an airbrush tan?

Contact me with your location, desired time, etc and I will get back with you as soon as possible.

If you would like to book me for an airbrush tanning party, please contact me with your name, contact information, the number of participants, and location. I will then get back to you with a quote.
